Group Analysis and Neurosciences: Mirror Neurons, the Suffering Body and the Social Brain in the Group at the Post-COVID Era

Our body’s immunity to tolerate illness affects how we act and interact with others. The function of  our social brain in our personal and external experiences is important especially through mirror neurons’ activation. The covid-19 pandemic caused a big mental and financial crisis, leading to long-term trauma and to chronic stress. This affects how our brain works. After COVID-19, our brains have changed to function more mechanically in a form of pensee operatoire, shaped mainly by media and the heavy use of electronics. This mainly improves the skills of the left side of the brain. People find it harder to have access,to understand and express emotions, connect feelings with events, and communicate with each other in person effectively.

The right hemisphere of the brain, necessary for expressing emotions in the frame of social interactions, can not function as much, at the post covid-19 era. This affects the status of our mental health, especially when facing organic and psychological traumatic situations. Group analytic psychotherapy aims to help people better handle,express and understand their thoughts and emotions.
In addition the environment can play a significant role in healing social and personal traumas by the activation of brain plasticity. A democratic, supportive group setting can help heal psychological and physical traumas.
